Do you often glance around and think, “My house is a mess”?

If you have dogs, this thought probably crosses your mind a lot.

We all love our fur babies, but their hair and dander can make your cleaning efforts seem futile. Pet dander is also the second most common cause of indoor allergies.

Even if you don’t have allergies, nothing feels as good as a clean home. Here are five tips for keeping a tidier home–even with dogs.

1. Maintain Good Grooming Habits

Your first line of defense in keeping a clean home (with dogs) is to keep your dogs as clean as possible.

If you haven’t already, get into the habit of bathing them regularly (weekly if possible). You could also set up recurring visits to your local pet groomer.

Keep your dog’s nails clipped, as long nails can scratch hardwood floors or tear furniture. Brush your dog a few times a week to control shedding–it’s a great way to bond too!

2. Invest in a Dog Paw Cleaner

If you live in an area that’s sandy, muddy, or snowy, a paw cleaner is an absolute must.

Rather than watching your dog track dirt, mud, and other debris across your floors, stop him at the door. Have your paw washer ready to dip each foot and easily wash away any debris.

Be sure to have an old towel or rag nearby to dry his paws off when you’re finished. A sturdy rug in the entryway will also help to cut down on outside debris.

3. Cover up Popular Spots

Has your dog claimed his favorite spot on the couch? Does he often leave a trail of kibble (and drool) on the floor around his food and water bowls?

Rather than trying to break those habits, embrace them and give your home a little buffer of protection.

Use an old sheet to cover “his” spot on the couch. You might also throw down a few washable rugs in his feeding area to keep the floor cleaner.

4. Try an Automatic Vacuum

If you’ve got hardwood or tile floors, an automatic vacuum could become your new best friend.

Yes, you’ll still have to sweep and mop occasionally. But the vacuum will significantly cut down on the amount of stray hair, dirt, and dust that collects on your floors.

Who knows? It might also provide your dog with some free entertainment during the day.

5. Hire Professional Help

Despite your best efforts, you may not have the time or energy to keep your home as clean as you’d like to.

That’s okay. Many people in your shoes bring in a professional cleaner to help keep their home spic and span. Even a once-a-month visit can make a world of difference!
