People go to great lengths to clean their homes of dust, and we can’t blame them. Numerous allergies stem from dust, and there was even an epidemic called dust pneumonia that swept across the U.S. in the 1930s, killing thousands.

While we don’t think you have to worry about any life-threatening risks from dust inside your home, it’s important to keep your living space clean.

Check out our hacks for the best way to clean a fan and air filters so you can breathe easy.

The Best Way to Clean a Fan

When it comes to house cleaning, dusting is an essential step. Dust gathers on all surfaces, from the highest corner of your ceiling to the dust bunnies under your couch.

But how do you clean off those awkward surfaces, such as your fan? You’ll need a few tools for the job, including:

  • An old rag, sheet, or microfiber cloth
  • A stepstool (for high to reach fan blades)
  • A shower cap or hat
  • Diluted soapy water or all-purpose cleaner

Cleaning a fan can be a messy business. Before you get started, make sure you’re wearing clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and a hat or shower cap to protect your hair. Also, turn off the fan.

Next, use your microfiber cloth or rag to wipe away the dust and debris you can see. If necessary, use the stepstool to reach surfaces too high for you to see on your own two feet.

Shake off or dispose of this debris in a trash bin, then use soapy water or all-purpose cleaner to go over the surface once again. This will capture and eliminate all of the unseen germs, mites, and debris still lingering on the fan blades.

What about Portable Fans?

For those who use portable fans, the process is nearly the same. The only difference is that you’ll need to remove the grille that encases the fan blades. To do this, you should find small clips or screws on the side of the grille.

From there, the grille should pull off pretty easily. Then just follow the same steps as above and replace the grille when you’re finished.

Tips for Cleaning Air Filters

Your air filters should be cleaned every one to three months depending on how dusty your home is and whether you have pets. Different HVAC systems have their own air filter setup, but typically you can find them either in your walls, your ceiling, or in the unit itself.

Before you replace a filter, check the size to make sure you purchase the right one. You can find the size listed on the filter itself. Next, purchase the filters and simply swap them out.

But what if you have a reusable filter? Simply run the filter under warm water until it’s clear, then let it air dry. Afterward, you can put it back into its proper place.
