The majority of Americans (52 percent, to be exact) say that cleaning the bathroom is their least favorite household task.

Are you part of this group? If so, what’s the worst part of cleaning the bathroom? For most people, it’s cleaning the toilet.

Cleaning the toilet isn’t exactly a fun task. It needs to be done, though, and you need to make sure you’re doing it correctly.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about how to clean a toilet.

How Often Should You Clean Your Toilet?

Many people have no idea how often they should clean various parts of their home, and the toilet is no exception.

As a general rule, it’s a good idea to clean and disinfect your toilet once per week. This helps to protect you and your family from harmful bacteria like E.coli.

You may also want to clean your toilet more often than this, especially if you have young kids or are working on potty training them.

How to Clean a Toilet

Okay, you know how often to clean a toilet. Now, it’s time for the fun part — the correct way to clean it. Here are some tips that will help you ensure you get your toilet sparkling clean every time:

Gather Your Supplies

Start by gathering your cleaning supplies. At the bare minimum, you’ll need the following:

  • Disinfecting spray
  • Paper towels
  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  • A stiff-bristle toilet brush

You’ll also want a pair of rubber cleaning gloves to protect your hands.

Start with the Outside

Many people neglect the outside of their toilet because they’re so focused on getting the interior clean. Make sure you’re spraying down the exterior with disinfecting spray to neutralize germs and get rid of stains, though.

Clean the Interior

Now, it’s time to get the inside clean. Start by draining the water out of the bowl for a deeper clean.

This allows you to use a mild cleaner (one that’s free of potentially harmful chemicals) and still get the same results with less work.

Once you’re satisfied with the bowl’s cleanliness level, turn the water back on and flush the toilet. Then, you’ll be good to go!

Sanitize Your Tools

When you’re finished cleaning, don’t forget to sanitize your toilet-cleaning tools. Definitely, don’t skip this step. You don’t want your cleaning tools covered in germs and growing mold, do you?

Let your brush air dry before you put it away. Rinse the canister that holds it with warm, soapy water, too. Be sure to clean your gloves as well and wash your hands with soap to finish off the job.

No Time for Toilet Cleaning?

You now know how to clean a toilet the correct way. As you can see, it’s not too difficult.
